Balmer Recruitment Ltd. has been retained by Genomics Medicine Ireland Ltd. to source a suitably qualified individual to take up a brand new position within their thriving team as Patient Advocacy & Education Lead.This is a senior position within the company and reports to the Head of Marketing and Communications.

About GMI

Genomics Medicine Ireland is an Irish life sciences company leading a large-scale research study across Ireland looking at the human genome to examine the relationship between genetics, health and disease.

Role purpose

The Patient Advocacy & Education Manager will support participant recruitment to GMI research studies by (a) identifying and engaging with patient advocacy organisations, (b) raising awareness of research studies and enrollment opportunities among the relevant patient communities and (c) designing and implementing genomics education initiatives for healthcare professionals and the general public. 

Duties and responsibilities

  • To develop an education and advocacy strategy for GMI
  • To heighten public awareness of genomics and GMI’s research activities
  • To develop a series of educational and explanatory tools, including information leaflets, videos, lectures and presentations, to help improve communication and understanding of genomics and GMI’s research studies
  • To participate in the development of recruitment strategies and study-specific participant materials
  • To develop and perform informed consent training for research personnel, where required
  • To plan, co-ordinate, develop and implement GMI’s educational programs for health care professionals, patient support groups and the general public
  • To disseminate knowledge of genomics to the wider community in the form of education programs aimed at second level and third level educational institutions
  • To provide internal education sessions for GMI staff on genomics
  • To contribute to the design of study recruitment initiatives
  • To work closely with the marketing, communications and public affairs team to survey the opinions of the general public with regards genomics and genetic data
  • To Initiate, build and maintain compliant and influential relationships with patient advocacy organizations, associations and external stakeholders in therapeutic areas of interest to GMI
  • To create program-specific patient advocacy strategic plans
  • To build relationships with members of the health care community and patients to the mutual benefit of GMI and patients
  • To advocate internally within GMI for the role and importance of third party alliances and ensure patients’ needs and insights are considered when organizing studies


  • Minimum of Degree level in a relevant discipline
  • Background in nursing / social care a bonus

Skills and Experience

  • Proven track record in relationship-building
  • Demonstrated expertise in patient recruitment
  • Experience in developing education initiatives and education materials
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Some patient advocacy experience preferred
  • Creative thinker who proposes practical solutions when challenges occur
  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to effectively manage multiple projects
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to see things from a patient perspective
  • Ability to explain complicated scientific concepts in simple form
  • Willingness and flexibility to travel on a Nationwide scale
  • Strong public speaking/presentation skills
  • Target driven
